World Environment Day

Forests: Nature at your service

The World Environment Day was held las 5th June. This commemoration was created by the United Nations in 1973 and symbolises our commitment to protecting and caring for our environment.

This year, coinciding with the International Year of Forests, the motto chosen has been “Forests: Nature at your service”. These ecosystems, which are home to the greatest biological diversity on Earth and are vital in the fight against climate change, are being destroyed at an alarming rate. Species, habitats and even human beings are being strongly affected by global deforestation and today, more than ever, we need to become involved in the search for solutions.

Under the scope of its commitment to nature, IBERDROLA has recently launched an R&D effort called Dalia which is designed to establish a series of technical and environmental criteria that will enable integration of tree felling and pruning work with power line maintenance in forests.

Through this innovative initiative aims to keep the power networks in optimal repair while respecting their natural surroundings and achieve the optimal use of the waste generated in tree felling and pruning work performed in the vicinity of the power infrastructure, using, for example, waste as biomass.

The Dalia Project will enable compile and disseminate information on tree species and their natural habitats, enabling classification of the power facilities and their interaction with the environment, assessing current and emerging risk factors when decisions are taken regarding forest work.

 
 
How to look after the environment all year round?

IBERDROLA invites you to put into practice some simple actions that contribute to protect our environment. Also, this year has celebrated EcoRun(*), a race that took place in Madrid last 5th June. WWF, SEO/Bird Life, Ocena and Green Cross have joined forces to organise this initiative, which has also been backed by IBERDROLA. Part of the funds collected from registration will be allocated to various environmental projects.
