The chairman of IBERDROLA said that the company “is aware of the important role that training and innovation should play in designing the new economic model, as they are both solid pillars on which sustainable growth can be built”. “The preparation and training of human resources are a key factor for a country like Spain, which aspires to play an increasingly important role in world affairs”, he added.

More than 600 applications

More than 600 high-quality applicants sent in their CVs for this first programme of grants offered by the IBERDROLA Foundation to study MA and PhD courses in Energy and the Environment.

This initiative is part of the Foundation’s 2010-2014 Master Plan which, in addition to endeavouring to improve the quality of life in the countries where the company operates, also strives for professional excellence in the energy sector.

The IBERDROLA Foundation has recently embarked on a new phase in which it will focus on three main areas of activity: the advance towards a sustainable energy model, cultural development in countries where IBERDROLA operates, and cooperation in development and advocacy programmes. The rollouts of these initiatives will be concentrated in Spain, the UK, the US and Latin America, regions where the company has a greater presence.

Ignacio Galán and Francisco Camps explained the pioneering and ambitious project this morning

Galán, the IBERDROLA chairman, underlined that the initiative is already fostering high-end industrial business and jobs in the area, “creating value and wealth for the citizens of Castellón, the Valencia region and Spain as a whole.”

The smart network supports remote services and enables clients to access the electricity market, monitoring their electricity usage data in real-time.

Galán said smart networks would also “encourage uptake of electric cars; IBERDROLA is working closely with the Valencia regional government in this area.”

The President of the Valencia regional government, Francisco Camps, and the chairman of IBERDROLA, Ignacio Galán, launched Spain’s first smart network project at the company’s Castellón offices today.

The launch was attended by the regional infrastructure and transport minister, Mario Flores, and the mayor of Castellón, Alberto Fabra. IBERDROLA was represented by the head of the Spain Networks Business, Javier Villalba, and the company’s advisory board for the Valencia region, headed by its chairman José Luis Olivas, also CEO of the Bancaja savings bank.

In his speech, Galán announced that Iberdrola is set to invest €22 million in the Castellón smart network project. The move involves adapting over 600 transformer stations – to be fitted out with state-of-the-art electronic equipment – and replacing the over 100,000 power meters supplying the city’s 175,000 inhabitants.

The IBERDROLA chairman underscored that “this is a cutting edge project in Spain entailing a major technological shift in the power distribution business. Castellón is set to become Spain’s – and possibly the world’s – leading city in this field.”

The company’s first steps in the city have been to renovate 26 transformer centres and commission the first 60 new power meters, which conform to the new specifications set down in Spain’s remote management Royal Decree and will operate as part of the smart network.

Ignacio Galán underlined that even at this early stage of implementation in the city the initiative is fostering high-end industrial business and jobs locally, “creating value and wealth for the citizens of Castellón and the Valencia region as a whole.”

The IBERDROLA chairman added that mass deployment of smart networks throughout the rest of Spain could see the power industry invest €5.5 billion and create close to 25,000 highly skilled jobs over the coming eight years.

Enhanced supply quality and energy efficiency

Castellón’s new smart network will support the remote provision of services, such as meter reading, subscriptions and deletions and changes to contracted capacity. The upgrade will enable clients to monitor their usage data in real-time and (assuming suitable future regulations) use flexible rates to improve their energy efficiency.

Galán explained that smart networks enhance supply quality by dramatically shortening downtime. “Smart networks will encourage the development and implementation of other innovative initiatives, too, such as the electric car – IBERDROLA is working very closely with the Valencia regional government in this area.”

Ignacio Galán used the launch to once again highlight the company’s commitment to the Valencia region. IBERDROLA RENOVABLES has its head office here and is a driving force in the local economy: it has invested over €3.5 billion over the past eight years and made annual purchases worth more than €600 million from hundreds of businesses in the region.

In an initiative springing from both companies’ commitment to sustainable development

By signing this agreement, the two companies will set up three lines of work to foster this type of transport: encouraging electric fleets, installing charging stations and participating in electric mobility demonstrations in cities

IBERDROLA and FCC have entered into a collaboration agreement to promote the development of the electric vehicle as a means for combating climate change and supporting sustainability.

The agreement, which will remain in force for two years, was signed in Madrid by Agustín Delgado, Director of Innovation, Environment and Quality in IBERDROLA, and Eduardo González, Managing Director of FCC Energía.

Under this agreement, FCC and Iberdrola plan to collaborate on activities related to electric mobility that will enhance both companies’ leadership in their respective sectors.

According to the terms of the agreement, the two companies will set up three lines of work to foster this type of transport: encouraging electric fleets, installing charging points and participating in electric mobility demonstrations in cities

FCC and Iberdrola plan to engage in various activities, such as installing charging points for these vehicles in car parks managed by the citizen services group, supplying electric fleets to companies and providing the necessary infrastructure at their offices, and carrying out the necessary work to adapt the technical vehicle inspection (Spanish acronym: ITV) centres to electric vehicles.

In order to guarantee the success of this agreement, both groups will exchange technical information on the electric vehicle and share their acquired knowledge in future as this technology continues to evolve.

IBERDROLA is one of the world’s foremost energy companies in terms of stock market capitalisation. It operates in 44 countries on four continents and has 33,000 employees and over 28 million customers. The Group’s focus on electrical mobility is in line with its pioneering commitment to the development of more environmentally-friendly technologies, which have made it the world leader in the sector of renewable energies today.

In this regard, the company has launched the Iberdrola Green Mobility Plan, the first all-round solution developed by a company in Spain to promote the use of this type of transport, offering the customer the chance to purchase an electric vehicle with financial support, the installation of the charging point and a 100% renewable energy supply.

FCC is one of the leading European groups in the citizen services sector, with a high degree of geographical and sectoral diversification. Operating in 54 countries around the world, its basic activities are the management of environmental and water services, the construction and management of major infrastructure and urban fittings, cement production and renewable energies.

As part of its diversification policy, FCC Energía is the company in charge of initiatives in the area of energy and sustainability. FCC carries out activities in the field of renewable energies, energy efficiency, co-generation and energy from waste (EfW).

IBERDROLA is the first Spanish company and among a pioneering few worldwide to obtain this accreditation

This certification, which marks a milestone in the company’s climate change effort, covers all of the group’s activities in Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Latin America

On the occasion of World Environment Day, which is being celebrated today, IBERDROLA is launching a tool on this website that will enable people to calculate their carbon footprint, with various tips on how it may be reduced

Journeys CO2 Calculator

AENOR has certified IBERDROLA’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory according to the UNE ISO 14064-1:2006 standard (Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals).

The firm has become the first Spanish company and one of a pioneering few worldwide to obtain the aforementioned certification from AENOR for its emissions portfolio, which covers all its activities in Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Latin America.

This recognition marks a milestone in IBERDROLA’s efforts to combat climate change, as systematic control over its carbon footprint will enable the company to continue its mission of efficient atmospheric emission reduction.

Greenhouse gas emissions inventories benefit the group in various ways, enhancing in-house knowledge and external communication of these emissions and ensuring that this information is factored into business development decisions with a view to promoting sustainability and identifying possible cost savings.

This certification issued by AENOR, the Spanish standardisation body, is further acknowledgement of the environmental commitment that has already earned the company important distinctions, such as its inclusion in the list of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World 2010 or its nomination for the tenth year in a row as one of the most sustainable utilities in the world, according to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) 2009.

In the context of this strategy on combating climate change and to coincide with the celebration of World Environment Day, IBERDROLA has launched a tool on its website to enable users to calculate their travel carbon footprint and learn how it may be reduced.

Commitment to bringing down emissions

This milestone, which ratifies the company’s firm commitment to caring for the environment, is in step with IBERDROLA’s allegiance to the cleanest generation technologies, particularly in the area of wind energy, where it is currently the world leader, with an installed power capacity of 11,294 megawatts (MW).

The company closed the first quarter of financial year 2010 with 83.3% of its output in Spain emission-free, a figure that stands at 52% for the group at large. Moreover, the figure for atmospheric emissions in the period stood at 231 grams of CO2 per kWh at group level, down 21.4% on the same period in the previous financial year. In Spain, emissions dropped by 47%, falling from 147 to 78 grams of CO2 per kWh.

Furthermore, IBERDROLA was the first electric utility to draw up a Climate Change Policy [PDF], with a view to promoting support for the international agreements that are needed in order to address this environmental problem, fostering the development of efficient technologies from the greenhouse gas emissions perspective, encouraging efficient use of energy and heightening its customers’ awareness so that they engage in responsible energy consumption.

The company also hosts an Environmental Experts Forum on an annual basis. This initiative was launched in 2008 with the aim of promoting the implementation of best practices in environmental issues, optimising management and endorsing the search for solutions to environmental problems.

With the aim of raising and heightening social awareness of the importance of caring for the planet, the company has been operating the Iberdrola Bus since 2005. Last year, it travelled to over 60 municipalities in Spain and welcomed a total of 78,330 visitors. The company’s green vehicle is available to various groups: educational and training centres, cultural institutions, the media, business groups and consumer associations.

The conference is part of the programme of activities making up the IBERDROLA Foundation’s 2010-2014 Action Plan.

This afternoon at the Madrid Stock Exchange, the Chairman of the IBERDROLA Foundation, Manuel Marín, presented the Nicholas Stern conference: Energy, the key to a more sustainable economy. This event was part of the foundation’s seminar series, Energy: Challenges for a sustainable future.

In his presentation, Marín highlighted the importance of reaching agreements which generate the investments needed to develop technologies that promote the efficient transmission and final use of energy, as well as the development of clean energy generation technologies.

He also highlighted that “only through the promotion of these clean technologies, especially renewables and specifically wind power, combined with more efficient and responsible energy consumption, will we be able to make clear and definitive progress towards mitigating the effects of global warming.”

IBERDROLA has a Climate Change Policy which aims to continue registering CO2 emissions per kWh produced that are at least 20% lower than the European sector average in 2020.

The company, a world leader in wind energy, is one of the companies with the lowest emissions in the sector. This is because 56% of our installed capacity and 52% of our output is completely emission free, he explained.

The Chairman of the IBERDROLA Foundation concluded his presentation by noting that “it is necessary to underscore that the long and critically important voyage towards environmental sustainability depends on the creation of an institutional framework that ensures the viability of investments.”

Effects of climate change

Nicholas Stern, Chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics, started his presentation by thanking the IBERDROLA Foundation for its invitation. He then went on to discuss the initiatives that countries should implement in order to combat the effects of climate change.

The economist highlighted that “to reach a solid international agreement, this must be effective, efficient, and fair”. Furthermore, in regard to the next UN Climate Change Conference being held in Cancun at the end of the year, he emphasised that participants should ‘choose collaboration over confrontation, and learn from the initiatives and difficulties of others”.

In addition, Stern wanted to highlight the initiatives that IBERDROLA is carrying out to promote energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He also underscored the important role of governments, which includes setting a price on CO2 emissions, promoting R&D and implementing regulations that penalise the most environmentally damaging technologies.

About the IBERDROLA Foundation

The IBERDROLA Foundation has just started a new era in which it will focus its activities on the three main areas set forth in the institution’s 2010-2014 Action Plan: the advance towards a sustainable energy model, cultural development in countries where IBERDROLA operates, and cooperation in development and advocacy programmes. The rollout of these initiatives will largely take place in Spain, the UK, the US and Latin America, regions where the company has a greater presence.

This is the first integrated solution promoting the use of this type of transport developed by a Spanish company

IBERDROLA has signed agreements with Going Green, to promote the sale of the vehicles, and Multiservicios Mapfre, to install the recharging stations in customers’ car parks

IBERDROLA has launched today the Iberdrola Green Transport Plan, through which it will offer customers the sale and financing of electric vehicles, install recharging stations and provide a 100% renewable power supply.

It is the first Spanish company to develop an integrated solution promoting the use of this type of transport. The initiative forms part of the group’s commitment to electric transport, a reliable alternative to promote sustainable development, enhance security of supply and optimise competitiveness.

To present this plan, IBERDROLA recently signed agreements with the electric vehicle import company Going Green, to promote the sale of this mode of transport, and Multiservicios Mapfre, a leading home improvement and repair company, to install the recharging stations, in particular in customers’ own homes.

The company’s latest commercial solution combines the electric car with green energy, meaning zero emissions when travelling and recharging, since this product will come from sources which are 100% renewable.

With this plan, IBERDROLA offers its customers a wide range of electric vehicles (cars, motorbikes and bikes) and the possibility to handle the financing of the purchase, as well as information on how customers can benefit from aid from the Movele Plan managed by the IDAE (Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings).

The company will manage the installation of the recharging stations in car parks, guaranteeing at all times the safety of the equipment, and will provide the user with tailored advisory service to meet all their needs.

Customers interested in signing up for the IBERDROLA Green Transport Plan may do so via the IBERDROLA website (www.iberdrola.com), by calling 901 20 20 20 or in any of the company’s more than 160 customer service sites throughout Spain.

Firm commitment to electric mobility

IBERDROLA’s interest in promoting electric vehicles goes back more than 10 years, when it introduced projects such: ‘Project Zeus’ between 1996 and 1998 with the Mondragón Group; ‘Project Viel’, conducted at its centre in San Agustín de Guadalix between 2002 and 2004; and a pilot project backed by the Valladolid City Council to introduce electric motorcycles and the necessary charging stations in this city.

IBERDROLA is currently involved in a number of electric vehicle-related task forces, including ‘Project Cenit Verde’, in conjunction with Seat, to develop Spanish technology for this type of transport; or ‘Project Merge’ (Mobile Energy Resources of Electricity) to analyse the impact of introducing these cars on current and future electricity distribution networks.

In Spain, the group is involved in different projects, including: the installation of a network of recharging stations for electric vehicles in its corporate buildings, participation in the Movele Plan in Madrid, agreements with the Vizcaya Provincial Council and the Town Councils of Alicante, Valladolid and Palencia or the EPV (Electrical Powered Vehicles) initiative in Valencia.

Outside of Spain, the company, through its subsidiary ScottishPower, is participating in a project focused on providing the necessary electricity infrastructure to use these vehicles in Glasgow. Meanwhile, in the US, IBERDROLA U.S.A. is working on an initiative related to electric trucks.

These projects come on top of the studies being conducted alongside General Motors Europe to analyse the technical requirements of the energy supply infrastructures needed for electric cars, its collaboration with international groups on the standardisation of charging parameters and its involvement in prestigious forums such as Foreve in Spain and GreenCars in Europe.

All of the above projects are a testament to IBERDROLA’s commitment to the development of this technology which, despite the significant progress made in recent years, still has a long way to go in certain aspects related to batteries and recharging stations, as well as in regulatory matters.

In this sense, the company believes that a key consideration for the electric car to be developed for the mass market is its impact on power distribution networks. The Spanish power system is currently capable of supporting 10 million electric cars, if they are recharged slowly and at times of low demand such as at night. This will also boost the penetration of renewable energies and ensure more competitive energy costs.

For IBERDROLA, the role played by power companies is essential for these cars to become widespread as they will be responsible for ensuring power supply, developing smart grids for vehicle recharging, and launching new services to meet users’ needs.

Thanks to the contribution from large hydro output (+157.6% to 8,069 million kWh) and renewable energy sources (+35.2% to 3,744 million kWh).

In line with its commitment to cut CO2 emissions, 83.3% of Iberdrola’s power output in the first quarter of 2010 was emission-free. Specifically, emissions narrowed 47% during the quarter, falling from 147 grams of CO2 per kWh to 78.

This milestone was made possible by the company’s strategic focus on clean generation technologies, particularly wind power, where it is today the world leader with capacity of 11,294 megawatts (MW). Through its renewables arm, Iberdrola registered record wind power output in Spain in the first quarter of 2010, at 3,528 million kWh.

Overall, renewable energies generated 3,744 million kWh in Spain in first quarter, up 35.2% on 2009, with large hydro accounting for a notable 8,069 million kWh, year-on-year output growth of 157.6%.

The group’s efforts to protect the planet also materialised in other initiatives, such as approval of its Climate Change Policy. Notably, IBERDROLA is the first Spanish utility to approve such a policy, the aim of which is to encourage support for the international agreements needed to solve this environmental issue, promote the development of efficient technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, foster the efficient use of energy and conduct awareness campaigns among its customers to encourage responsible energy consumption.

Each year IBERDROLA holds what it terms the Environmental Experts Forum with the aim of promoting best practice on environmental matters, improving its environmental management record and fostering research into solutions for environmental problems. The last edition of the forum focused on analysing Iberdrola’s strategy for combating climate change.

In order to raise citizen awareness of the need to care for our planet, the company has been using the Iberdrola Bus to tour since 2005. Last year, the bus visited 60 towns in Spain, receiving a total of 78,330 visitors. The company’s green vehicle targets a range of constituencies: educational and training centres, cultural institutions, the media, business groups and consumer associations.

Just this month, IBERDROLA launched a campaign to encourage its suppliers to control their CO2 emissions. Specifically, in a pilot test, the company sent a survey and letter to 60 of its principal suppliers with a series of suggestions designed to help them record their greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2 emissions, and to make them familiar with the possible impact of climate change on their businesses.
