  • The Group employs all currently available sources of clean energy generation. As well as being world leader in wind power, IBERDROLA has substantial hydroelectricity capacity with major new projects under way such as the 1,200 MW Alto Támega development in Portugal, and is participating in the new nuclear build programme in the United Kingdom.

  • The Company is in the vanguard of new clean energy technology and emission reduction initiatives. Through its IBERDROLA Renovables and ScottishPower subsidiaries, the Group is working on a number of major projects:

Carbon capture and storage (CCS).The first pilot plant in the UK is in operation at ScottishPower’s Longannet coal-fired plant in Scotland, with the aim of launching CCS capacity there of 300 MW in 2014. The project is backed by the World Wildlife Fund and other ecology groups.

The PERSEO project: IBERDROLA has allocated €6 million to innovative generation technologies and systems aimed at minimizing environmental impact.

Offshore wind power: IBERDROLA Renovables has obtained permits for a new wind farm off the coast of northwest England.

Tidal energy: The company has a number of trial projects under way.

Biomass energy: IBERDROLA in 2009 started up operations at Spain’s first biomass plant at Corduente, Guadalajara province.

Solar energy: The Company has opened its firs solar thermal plant at Puertollano, near Ciudad Real.

  • The IBERDROLA Group is active in energy efficiency initiatives. Among these, it is participating in a programme of the U.S. government to promote new smart grids in the country, which will facilitate economy in consumption, as well as access to renewable energy sources. Its subsidiary in the state of Maine recently won nearly $100 million in government grants to promote its project. The Group is also active in encouraging employees and customers to save energy and maximize efficient use, as well as participating in projects both in Spain and the UK to develop electric cars.

  • Job creation. Between 2009 and 2009, IBERDROLA Renovables has created close to 40,000 direct and indirect jobs. The CCS project under development in the UK can create up to 60,000 new jobs.
