Chairman’s letter

Without a doubt, an ambitious international agreement on emissions reductions to replace the Kyoto Protocol from 2012 would mark a watershed in efforts to combat climate change and achieve a framework to avoid the devastating consequences that a rise in global temperatures of more than 2ºC would bring.

The role played by Man in global warming is no longer subject to speculation and is now founded on solid scientific evidence. This in turn shows us the way to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions: designing a new energy model based on sustainability, competitiveness and security of supply….one which gradually substitutes fossil fuels with clean energy sources.

While there are many complex problems to be resolved in Copenhagen in order to achieve a political agreement, the move towards a far-reaching transformation of the global energy model is unstoppable.

The International Energy Agency seeks an entirely new model founded on increased investment in renewable energy, especially in wind power because of its mature technology. The European Union, at the forefront of actions to combat climate change, has set an objective of 20% of its energy consumption to come from renewable energy by 2020.

The United States, meanwhile, has taken a new direction in energy policy to provide incentives for investment in networks and also in renewable energy, which is projected to double installed capacity in the country in three years, with a goal of raising its contribution to total generation to 10% in 2012 and 25% in 2025.
As one of the world’s leading energy companies and global leader in wind power, IBERDROLA is fully aligned with these new energy priorities and has led the way in focusing on clean energy. It now has an installed capacity of 10,500 MW in renewables around the world and a project pipeline of 57,000 MW.
Through initiatives such as this section of our Web and other communications initiatives, IBERDROLA hopes to lend its support to efforts in Copenhagen to make progress in combating climate change.

For IBERDROLA, the Copenhagen meeting is a perfect opportunity for governments to set the foundations for a new green economy, encourage investments in line with environmental priorities and convert the current energy model into a powerful tool for economic recovery, reactivating investment and creating jobs.
