THE COMPANY IS COMMITTED TO ENSURING THAT ITS EMISSIONS PER KWH REMAIN AT LEAST 20% LOWER THAN THE EUROPEAN ELECTRICITY INDUSTRY IN 2020.
Copenhagen hosted a major conference where world governments discussed ways to achieve a global commitment on combating climate change. The Conference, known as COP15, brought together more than 190 countries with the ultimate goal of replacing the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012.
IBERDROLA, world leader in renewable energy, played an active role in meetings on the sidelines of the Conference which took place between December 7-18 and manifested its firm support for a common strategy on climate change.
IBERDROLA’s participation in COP15, through its membership of energy sector groups and associations such as The Climate Group, reflected its permanent commitment to combating climate change. For more than 10 years, the Company has been promoting initiatives aimed at cutting CO₂ emissions, in line with its support for the Kyoto principles.
The Company was the first electricity group in Spain to invest strongly in renewable energy, particularly in the wind power sector where boasts the world’s largest installed capacity with more than 10,000 MW. It has also developed a number of projects aimed at economising on consumption and maximizing energy efficiency, as well as pioneering new technologies such as carbon capture, electric cars and marine energy. This firm commitment and consistent strategy has placed the Company among the leaders in the most prestigious sustainability indices such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index where IBERDROLA is the only power company to have featured for the past 10 years.
As a world leader in renewable energy, committed to the fight against climate change, IBERDROLA believes that it is urgent to establish a common strategy on global warming to ensure strong momentum in these efforts ahead of the expiry of the Kyoto Protocol in 2012. This common strategy should focus on emission reduction and means to achieve this in the coming years, as well as on developing an efficient carbon market, promoting green investments and achieving a stable and favourable regulatory environment. Therefore, IBERDROLA is committed to ensuring that its emissions per kilowatt hour remain at least 20% lower than the European electricity industry in 2020.
IBERDROLA is working towards to a sustainable future for everyone, one in which we want you to take part.
