20/04/2012 IBERDROLA FOSTERS ENERGY EFFICIENCY AS A MEANS TO PROTECT THE PLANET

IBERDROLA is seeking to promote energy efficiency as one of the most important ways to protect our planet. This strategic commitment implies fostering responsible use of resources and promoting more environmentally-friendly behaviour and technology, among other things.

Against this backdrop, the company has become the leading developer of renewable energy, most especially wind power, having installed over 14,000 megawatts (MW) of clean power generation capacity worldwide. It is also promoting development of new renewable-generation technologies, such as offshore wind power (wave and current).
IBERDROLA was recently awarded a concession for the exclusive rights to build and operate the 500 MW Saint-Brieuc offshore wind-power complex by the French government. In all, the Group’s offshore pipeline currently encompasses over 11,000 MW of new capacity.

Elsewhere, the company is also going to lengths to stimulate energy efficiency, through the deployment of smart grids in Spain, the UK and the US. Network upgrading with smart grids will contribute to the integration of distributed generation, pave the way for the mass rollout of electric vehicles and boost power usage efficiency.

Along these lines, IBERDROLA is also contributing to protecting the Earth by sponsoring electric mobility, which is emerging as a viable alternative that will reduce oil dependence and lower carbon emissions. This is the background for the Green Mobility Plan, an end-to-end solution targeted at consumers and companies encompassing the purchase of an electric vehicle, the installation of a charging station, consumer financing and the supply of 100% renewable power. This package is the first of its kind in Spain. The company has also launched a car-sharing service for employees, under which its professionals can use Think City vehicles to carry out sales visits in Madrid, Bilbao, Seville, Valencia, Valladolid and Barcelona.

These initiatives have been recognised in the form of multiple accolades: IBERDROLA is the only global utility to have been included in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) since it was first compiled and the only Spanish utility included in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World 2012 ranking, while it recently achieved Gold Class classification in The Sustainability Yearbook 2012 compiled by KPMG and SAM and presented at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos.
