03/02/2012 IBERDROLA SLASHES CO2 EMISSIONS 5.5% IN 2011
- IBERDROLA awarded Gold Class distinction in The Sustainability Yearbook 2012, complied by KPMG and SAM
- 45% of the Group’s global output was free of CO2 emissions, a figure that rises to 75% in Spain. Meanwhile, 58% of its global installed capacity was clean, while in Spain this figure was 70%.
IBERDROLA’s staunch commitment to the most environmentally-friendly generation technologies has helped it slash CO2 emissions by 5.5% worldwide, down from 256 grams of CO2 per kWh in 2010 to 242 grams of CO2 per kWh in 2011.
At the end of 2011, 45% of the Group’s global output was free of CO2 emissions, a figure that rises to 75% in Spain. Meanwhile, 58% of its global installed capacity was clean, while in Spain this figure was 70%.
At the end of 2011, IBERDROLA had 26,793 megawatts (MW) generated from clean sources across the globe, more than 17,867 megawatts of which can be found in Spain. The Company aims to slash its CO2 emissions ratio 30% by 2020 compared to 2007. To date it has achieved a 22% reduction.
IBERDROLA’s tireless work to spearhead the development of green energies is evidenced, among other things, by its market leadership in the wind power sector. With renewable energy capacity of almost 13,690 MW, IBERDROLA owns some of the largest wind farms in the world: the Whitelee park in Scotland, the largest in Europe; El Andévalo in Spain, the biggest on Continental Europe; and the one in Peñascal (United States), the leading complex of its type that the company has in the world.
The Group, which has one of the most sustainable and balanced generation mixes in the world, also boasts 9,731 MW in hydro power capacity, 3,373 MW nuclear, 13,189 MW from CCGTs and 1,177 MW capacity from cogeneration facilities.
In order to maintain a generation mix low in CO2 emissions and to further enhance its green credentials, IBERDROLA continues to foster the development of new clean energy sources such as marine energy. In this sphere, the company is currently involved in major offshore wind, wave and tidal energy projects, totalling 12,000 MW.
This commitment to reduce emissions has seen Iberdrola awarded Gold Class distinction in The Sustainability Yearbook 2012, compiled by KPMG and SAM which was presented at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos.
This report includes those companies that have been recognised as leaders in sustainability, belonging to 58 sectors analysed by SAM’s the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). The companies recognised by SAM are, according to this ranking, standard bearers in their respective sectors in terms of environmental, social and corporate governance practices.
Iberdrola is also the only Spanish utility included in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World 2012 Index. Recently presented at Davos, this report assess various aspects of the world’s leading companies, including transparency, the sustainable use of resources, innovation capacity and criteria relating to social responsibility and corporate governance.
